Cumbernauld's tree cover is largely a product of the town's original 1955 New Town design — mature planting along the green buffer strips and footpaths is now 60-70 years old and often due for crown reduction or deadwood removal rather than routine trimming.

In Kildrum and Seafar that usually means shaping garden trees planted alongside the original housing; nearer Cumbernauld Village, trees can fall inside the Conservation Area, where North Lanarkshire Council's consent is needed first.
